Heart disease includes a range of conditions that affect the heart and circulation. They can be both acute and chronic, causing symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations, dizziness or swelling.

We offer diagnosis and treatment with a focus on the most common heart and circulatory diseases.

We treat, among other things:

  • Coronary heart disease/angina pectoris
  • Heart failure (heart insufficiency)
  • Heart valve diseases
  • Atrial fibrillation and other heart rhythm disorders
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure) with cardiac effects
  • Peripheral circulatory disease/atherosclerosis

Typical symptoms of heart disease

  • Chest pain or chest tightness
  • Shortness of breath during activity or rest, possibly when lying down
  • Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat
  • Fatigue, fluid retention (e.g. swollen ankles)
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Cyanosis (blue discoloration of fingers/lips) or cold hands and feet

Cardiology – The specialty of the heart and circulation

Cardiology is the medical specialty that deals with diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Our cardiology specialists diagnose and treat a wide range of heart diseases, including high blood pressure, angina pectoris, heart valve diseases, heart rhythm disorders, heart failure and congenital heart diseases. An accurate diagnosis requires a thorough cardiological examination, where we use, among other things, ECG, echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart), blood tests and possibly cardiac CT or MRI scanning, depending on symptoms and disease presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is atherosclerosis (ischemic heart disease)?

Atherosclerosis occurs when fat and calcium build up in the coronary arteries of the heart, reducing blood flow to the heart muscle. This can cause symptoms such as chest tightness, shortness of breath and reduced physical performance.

The condition is typically diagnosed with an ECG, cardiac CT, stress test, or possibly cardiac catheterization. Treatment often consists of lifestyle changes, medication, and in some cases, balloon dilation or bypass surgery.

  • What is high blood pressure (hypertension) and why is it important to treat?

High blood pressure is a very common heart disease and a significant risk factor for heart attack, heart failure and stroke. Many people have no symptoms, but over time the disease can put a strain on the heart and blood vessels.

The assessment includes blood pressure measurements, blood tests and assessment of cardiovascular risk. Treatment often consists of lifestyle changes and blood pressure-lowering medication, which is adjusted individually.

  • What are heart rhythm disorders (arrhythmias)?

Heart rhythm disorders occur when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly. The most common symptoms are palpitations, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath.

The evaluation may include an ECG, Holter monitoring, and ultrasound of the heart. Treatment depends on the type of arrhythmia and may consist of medication, blood thinners, electric shock (DC conversion), or catheter-based treatment.

Preliminary investigation

The preliminary examination lasts between half an hour and a full hour and takes place at our private hospital in Charlottenlund, where the cardiology specialist takes the time to talk to you and listen to your symptoms and medical history. The purpose of the conversation is to form an overview of your genes, risk factors and any previous heart diseases.

A thorough cardiological examination is then performed based on your medical history. The examination is completely painless and may include measuring blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturation as well as recording an ECG (electrocardiogram). Depending on the symptoms, the specialist may supplement with echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart), exercise ECG, blood tests or referral for cardiac CT or MRI scanning. It may also be necessary to perform a longer-term examination of the heart - a so-called "Holter monitoring"

Based on the interview and examinations, the specialist forms an overall picture of your heart and circulation to assess whether there is a heart disease, as well as what further examinations or treatments should be initiated.

Follow-up interview or check-up: Follow-up

When the results of any further tests are available, you will either be contacted by telephone or invited to a follow-up consultation at the clinic. This is agreed individually between the doctor and the patient.

If further examination or treatment is needed at a public hospital, we will of course provide the necessary referral so that you do not have to see your own doctor first.
