Benefits of using WatchPAT compared to CRM that requires pickup and drop-off

  1. Delivery straight to your door: One of the biggest advantages of WatchPAT is that the device can be shipped directly to the patient’s home. This eliminates the need for the patient to pick up and drop off the equipment at the hospital, saving both time and hassle. Many patients find it inconvenient to have to take time out of their day to visit a hospital or clinic, especially when it requires planning transportation and handling equipment. With WatchPAT, they can complete the test in the comfort of their own home, providing a much more flexible and convenient solution.
  2. This home-based approach means that patients can have the test performed in a more relaxed and natural environment, without the stress of having to attend a hospital. They don’t have to worry about finding time to pick up and return the device, making it easier to get the test done, while also providing a better experience for the patient.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is watchPAT?

The WatchPAT One is a single-use home test for diagnosing sleep apnea. It uses advanced Peripheral Arterial Tone (PAT) technology to measure changes in blood flow, oxygen saturation, heart rate, body movements, and snoring during sleep. The device is simple to use, requiring only a finger probe and a smartphone app. Data is automatically sent to a doctor for analysis, making it a convenient and accurate way to detect sleep apnea without the need for a traditional sleep lab test.

WatchPAT one is not only used at Charlottenlund Private Hospital, but also at Rigshospitalet's sleep clinic and many other places.

  • What is the difference from a regular CRM survey?

A traditional CRM (Cardio-Respiratory Monitoring) study for sleep apnea is typically performed either in a sleep clinic or as an advanced home test with multiple sensors. This study measures, among other things, breathing patterns, oxygen saturation, heart rate, body position and airflow using nasal catheters, chest straps and often electrodes to record brain activity. It provides a comprehensive assessment of sleep disorders, but can be cumbersome for the patient due to the many connected sensors.

The WatchPAT One stands out as a simpler and more user-friendly home test. Instead of multiple measurement points, it uses a finger probe and a sensor on the chest to measure changes in blood flow, oxygen saturation and heart rate. It uses PAT (Peripheral Arterial Tone) technology to detect sleep disturbances and automatically sends data via a smartphone app for analysis. The WatchPAT One does not require a nasal catheter or straps, making it more comfortable for the patient, but it does not provide quite as detailed information as a full CRM study.

  • What do the doctors at Charlottenlund Private Hospital examine for?

When an otolaryngologist examines a patient for sleep apnea, the focus is on anatomical conditions in the upper airway that may contribute to breathing problems during sleep.

    The examination typically includes:

Nasal passage: The doctor checks for nasal polyps, a deviated nasal septum, or swollen mucous membranes that may restrict airflow.

Pharynx and tonsils: Large tonsils or narrowing of the throat can block the airway and worsen sleep apnea.

Soft palate and uvula: A flaccid or elongated soft palate can contribute to airway collapse during sleep.

Tongue and base of the tongue: A large tongue or a low-lying base of the tongue can obstruct the airway.

Jaw and neck structure: Anatomical conditions such as a small lower jaw or a narrow neck can increase the risk of airway obstruction.

    Endoscopy:

The doctor may also perform a fiberoptic snoring test, in which a thin, flexible scope is passed through the nose to assess where the airway obstruction is occurring. The results are used to assess the need for treatment such as CPAP, a mouth guard, or surgery.

Fact box about sleep apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition in which the airway becomes blocked during sleep, leading to repeated pauses in breathing. This causes disrupted sleep and symptoms such as snoring, choking sensations, and daytime fatigue. The condition is often caused by obesity, age, or anatomical factors and can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. Treatment includes lifestyle changes, CPAP therapy, or in some cases, a mouth guard or surgery.
