Dermatology – The specialty of skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes
Dermatology is the medical specialty that deals with diseases of the skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes. Our dermatologists (dermatology specialists) diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, including eczema, acne, psoriasis, skin cancer, pigment changes, rosacea, hair loss and autoimmune skin diseases such as lupus, vitiligo and blistering diseases.
An accurate diagnosis requires a thorough dermatological assessment. We use both clinical examination, dermatoscopy (magnification of skin changes) and possibly skin biopsy, laboratory tests and imaging, depending on the symptoms and disease picture.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is acne and why do you get it?
Acne – or pimples – occurs when the skin’s oil glands become clogged and inflamed. It’s most common in teenagers, but many adults experience it too. Causes can include hormonal changes, heredity, skin care products or stress. Acne most often appears on the face, chest and back and ranges from mild blackheads to severe inflammation. Treatment depends on the type and can be both topical and medical.
What is eczema and how does it manifest itself?
Eczema is a condition where the skin becomes dry, itchy, red and sometimes oozing or cracking. There are several forms:
Atopic eczema, which often starts in childhood
Contact dermatitis caused by a reaction to, for example, perfume or nickel
Seborrheic dermatitis, typically seen on the scalp and face
Eczema can flare up and often requires moisturizers and, in some cases, medical treatment.
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease in which the skin produces new cells too quickly. This leads to red, scaly patches – often on the elbows, knees, scalp and back. The disease fluctuates between outbreaks and calmer periods. It can also affect the nails and joints. Psoriasis is caused by a combination of hereditary factors and external influences, such as infections or stress.
What is skin cancer and pre-cancerous lesions?
Skin cancer is a general term for several types of skin cancer. The most common are:
Basal cell cancer – grows slowly and rarely spreads
Squamous cell carcinoma – can spread if left untreated
Melanoma – the most serious form that can spread quickly
Precancerous lesions, such as actinic keratoses, appear as rough or scaly patches and should be investigated. Early detection is important – especially if a spot changes color, shape or starts to bleed.
Other skin diseases
In addition to the most common conditions, we also treat a number of other rheumatological diseases, including:
Connective tissue diseases such as lupus (SLE), Sjögren's syndrome, and systemic scleroderma
Vasculitis diseases (inflammation of blood vessels)
Polymyalgia rheumatica
Crystal gout (e.g. gouty arthritis and pyrophosphate gout)
Reactive arthritis
Tenosynovitis and bursitis
Overuse-related disorders of joints and soft tissues
These conditions can be complex and often require a thorough assessment, blood tests, and imaging to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.

Pre-study
A typical dermatology consultation lasts about 30 minutes and takes place at our private hospital in Charlottenlund. The dermatology specialist takes the time to listen to your symptoms and medical history to get a clear picture of your skin condition.
A thorough examination of the skin, hair, nails and any mucosal changes is then performed. The examination is painless and includes, among other things, the use of dermatoscopy, which allows for a detailed assessment of skin changes.
If necessary, the specialist can also perform minor procedures, such as curettage (scraping of skin lesions) or skin biopsy to take samples for further analysis.
Based on the interview and examination, the specialist assesses which skin diseases can explain your symptoms and whether further examinations such as blood tests or allergy tests are needed.
Follow-up
In some cases, you will be called when the results of the additional tests are available. In other cases, the follow-up will take place on an outpatient basis, i.e. in connection with an appointment. This is agreed in each individual case between the doctor and the patient. In cases where we need to refer you to a public hospital, we will of course also handle this so that you do not have to visit your own doctor just for a referral.
