Thyroid removal at Charlottenlund private hospital
Charlottenlund Private Hospital offers surgery on the thyroid gland (glandula thyreoidea). We perform, among other things, removal of benign nodules (so-called adenomas) and removal of one side of the thyroid gland, so-called hemithyroidectomy. The operations are only performed by senior doctors in throat surgery who work as throat surgeons at the university hospitals in the Capital Region of Denmark.
We are proud to be able to offer surgeries by some of the most skilled neck surgeons in Denmark.
Why consider a hemithyroidectomy?
Most patients who undergo this surgery come because of long waiting times in the public sector. The reason for the desire to remove the thyroid gland is most often benign nodules or cysts that cause annoying - but not dangerous - pressure on the front of the neck.
How is the operation performed?
The operation is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes a small incision in the front of the neck to access the thyroid gland and removes one half. The incision is then closed with stitches. Most patients can go home the same day or the day after the operation.
Aftercare and healing – what you need to know:
After surgery, there may be some slight swelling and tenderness in the area, which will subside within a few days. Most people return to their normal activities within a week. In some cases, hormone supplements may be needed if the remaining part of the thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones. It is important to follow up with your doctor to ensure that your hormone balance is correct after surgery.
Our specialist doctors ensure that you receive thorough information about the aftercare and pain relief on the day of surgery.

Pre-study
Before you are scheduled for surgery, it is important that the diagnosis is correct and scintigraphy, biopsy, and ultrasound or MRI scans are often available, so that the surgeon can assess the extent of the surgery before it is agreed upon.
During the preliminary examination, the surgeon will thoroughly review the procedure with you and thoroughly familiarize you with what you can expect before and after the procedure.
Operation
The operations are performed exclusively by permanently attached senior physicians who work daily as senior physicians subspecialized in throat surgery at public hospitals.
The operations are not performed through the Extended Free Hospital Choice (DUF) as this does not include thyroid surgery, but are performed both privately and through health insurance.
Erik writes the following on TrustPilot after thyroid surgery in 2022:
"Thank you for a fantastic course. I have nothing but praise for the entire course. All staff are highly motivated to provide a good experience, you have the experience of being "the one and only" - 5 stars from here. Professionally, probably some of the most skilled doctors in the country."
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a thyroid gland?
The thyroid gland is a gland that produces metabolic hormones and is located on either side of the windpipe. The gland thus has two so-called lobes, or halves. Across the windpipe, the two lobes are connected by a narrow strip of thyroid tissue called the isthmus.
The thyroid gland produces its hormone - called Thyroid hormone - when it is stimulated to do so by the so-called thyroid-stimulating hormone or TSH. The hormones of the gland itself are called T3 and T4. The hormones affect all the cells of the body and seek to ensure that the cells' activity level is appropriate. If the gland produces too little thyroid hormone, you will typically feel tired, gain weight, become anxious or depressed, and freeze.
If the gland produces too much hormone, you will typically sweat, have a pounding heart, shake your hands, lose weight and have trouble sleeping. In severe cases, you may have enlarged eyes - this is called exopthalmus.
The gland's activity is carefully regulated so that neither too little nor too much hormone is produced, thus maintaining a good balance throughout the system.
Why operate on the thyroid gland?
In some patients - most often women - the thyroid gland develops nodules that are quite benign, but which grow and grow, thus becoming both cosmetically disturbing and causing pressure symptoms. This is most often in connection with the disease atoxic multinodular goiter.
This is a fairly harmless condition that many women suffer from and which usually does not need to be treated - unless the nodules in the gland grow so large that they become troublesome. In these cases, several treatments may be offered - and in some cases this will be an operation to remove the side of the thyroid gland that is putting pressure on the neck and causing discomfort. After this, the remaining side of the thyroid gland will take over the function so that you will not be lacking hormones.
How is the operation performed?
