Neurology – The specialty of the brain and nervous system

Neurology is the medical specialty that deals with diseases of the brain, spinal cord and nervous system. Our neurological specialists diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, including migraine, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis (MS) and dementias such as Alzheimer's. An accurate diagnosis requires a thorough neurological examination, where we use both blood tests and lumbar puncture (a sample of spinal fluid) but also advanced examinations such as MRI scans, EEG and nerve conduction studies.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Alzheimer's disease?

A chronic brain disease that slowly affects memory and the ability to think and communicate. The disease develops gradually and can lead to personality changes and reduced functional ability. There is no cure, but treatment can slow the progression.

  • What is Parkinson's disease?

A neurological disorder that affects body movements and causes tremors, muscle stiffness, and slow movements. It is caused by a lack of dopamine in the brain. Treatment primarily consists of medication and physical therapy to ease the symptoms.

  • What is epilepsy?

A brain disorder in which electrical signals in the brain become disrupted, which can lead to seizures. Seizures can range from brief absences to severe convulsions. Epilepsy can often be treated with medications that reduce or prevent seizures.

  • What is migraine?

An intense and often throbbing headache that can last for hours or days. It is often accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and visual disturbances (aura). The cause is not fully understood, but triggers such as stress, lack of sleep, and certain foods may play a role.

  • Other neurological diseases

Neurology encompasses a wide range of diseases, including autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and Guillain-Barré syndrome, circulatory diseases such as stroke, and conditions that affect nerve function, such as neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Symptoms vary depending on the disease, but can include muscle weakness, balance problems, emotional disturbances, and cognitive changes.

The diagnosis is made through neurological examinations and scans, and treatment is individually tailored to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life.

Pre-study

The preliminary examination lasts one hour and takes place at our private hospital in Charlottenlund, where the neurologist first takes the time to talk to you and listen to your symptoms and medical history, thereby trying to form an overview of the subject and scope of the inquiry. A neurological examination is then carried out based on your medical history. This is completely painless and involves various tests of sensation, reflexes, strength, coordination, balance and much more. Based on this conversation and the neurological examination, the specialist forms an idea of which conditions could possibly explain your symptoms and which further examinations it would be relevant to carry out. This could be blood tests, EEG, MRI scan, nerve conduction studies or perhaps a spinal cord test.

Follow-up

In some cases, you will be called when the results of the additional tests are available. In other cases, the follow-up will take place on an outpatient basis, i.e. in connection with an appointment. This is agreed in each individual case between the doctor and the patient. In cases where we need to refer you to a public hospital, we will of course also handle this so that you do not have to visit your own doctor just for a referral.
