Charlottenlund Private Hospital offers treatment and vaccination against allergies

The allergy clinic at Charlottenlund Private Hospital offers allergy assessment and treatment. The treatment is basically carried out as a home treatment, which is managed from here by a nurse with whom you are in close contact throughout the process.

About allergy vaccination - SLIT

Allergy vaccination takes place without you having to get a shot!

Today, the treatment of many allergies is carried out as so-called SLIT treatment.

Allergy vaccination as tablet treatment (sublingual):

It is currently possible to be vaccinated against birch pollen, grass pollen and house dust mites with tablet treatment.

The tablet (melting tablet) is placed under the tongue and must be taken once a day for 3 years. It is very important that you remember to take the tablet every day. The first tablet must ALWAYS be taken in the clinic. Reactions to tablet treatment are most often seen as local mild reactions in the form of discomfort in the oral cavity - especially itching and irritation/swelling. The discomfort is most often temporary. In rare cases, severe swelling in the mouth and throat may develop upon first intake, which may require urgent treatment. Therefore, you must be with us when the treatment is started.

How a treatment proceeds:

Once we have determined which different allergens you are allergic to, treatment with orodispersible tablets must be started. Allergy vaccination with tablets is also called Sublingual Immune Therapy (SLIT).

The purpose of allergy vaccination is to reduce allergy symptoms and to ensure that you use less medication for your symptoms. We do not start allergy vaccination during the allergy pollen season or if you are pregnant.

Purchase of vaccine: We issue the prescription when we have agreed on the treatment and when it should be started. You must then purchase the vaccine yourself and bring it with you when treatment starts. Typically, we issue a small dose to start with, so that we can test whether you tolerate the medicine before prescribing large amounts of medicine. The price is approx. DKK 10,000 per year, of which the region covers the equivalent of approx. DKK 7,000. The effect of the treatment will be assessed after the first year or first season. The treatment will be stopped if there are unacceptable side effects or if there is no effect.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the symptoms of allergies to birch, grass and house dust mites?

Symptoms typically include sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy and watery eyes, cough and in some cases asthma. Symptoms occur seasonally with birch and grass, while house dust mite allergies often cause year-round symptoms.

  • How are these allergies diagnosed?

The diagnosis is made through a combination of medical history, skin prick test and/or blood test (specific IgE antibodies), which can show whether the body reacts to birch pollen, grass pollen or house dust mites.

  • What is SLIT treatment and how does it work?

SLIT (Sublingual Immunotherapy) is a form of allergy vaccination where a small dose of the allergen is taken under the tongue daily. The treatment "trains" the immune system to tolerate the substance better and can reduce symptoms and the need for medication in the long term.

  • How long does SLIT treatment take and who can get it?

SLIT is usually given for 3 years and should be started outside the pollen season. It can be given to both children and adults with documented allergies and severe symptoms that are not well controlled with regular medication.

  • Are there side effects to SLIT, and is the treatment safe?

Most side effects are mild and occur locally in the mouth, such as itching or irritation. Serious side effects are very rare. The treatment is well documented and is generally considered safe.
