Sleep apnea

The importance of quality sleep for overall health and well-being

Good sleep is essential for our general health and well-being. When we sleep well, the body and brain recover, which is essential for maintaining optimal function and health in our daily lives. Sleep apnea disrupts these processes and should therefore be treated.

About Sleep

Sleep plays an important role in our cognitive functions, including concentration, attention, learning and memory. When sleep is disturbed, it can result in reduced ability to concentrate, lack of focus, poor memory and reduced ability to learn and think clearly. It affects our daily performance and productivity.

Lack of sleep or disturbed sleep can have a significant impact on our mental health. It has been observed that sleep problems can increase the risk of developing mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.

Our sleep patterns play a role in regulating hormones that control appetite and metabolism. Disturbed sleep can lead to an imbalance in the hormones that regulate hunger and satiety, which can contribute to weight gain and the development of metabolic problems such as diabetes.

There is also a link between poor sleep and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Undisturbed sleep is important for maintaining healthy blood pressure and normal heart function.

It is important to be aware that chronic lack of sleep, for example due to sleep apnea or persistently disturbed sleep, can have long-term health consequences. It is therefore crucial to prioritize and ensure a good quality of sleep in order to achieve and maintain an optimal state of health.

People with untreated sleep apnea also have an increased risk of occupational and traffic accidents and can have their driving license revoked.

About Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that affects breathing while sleeping. When we sleep, our muscles normally relax, including the muscles that help keep our airways open. But in people with sleep apnea, the airway becomes temporarily blocked or narrowed during sleep, making it difficult to get enough air.

The most common form of sleep apnea is called obstructive sleep apnea. It happens when the soft tissues at the back of the throat relax too much and block the airway. When airflow stops or becomes restricted, it can lead to interruptions in sleep and periods of lower blood oxygen saturation.

The symptoms of sleep apnea can include loud snoring, frequent awakenings at night, morning headaches, extreme fatigue during the day, difficulty concentrating and irritability. It is important to note that not everyone who snores has sleep apnea, but it is one of the most prominent symptoms.

About investigating sleep apnea

If you suspect that you have sleep apnea, investigating this condition may involve the use of CRM (Cardio Respiratory Monitoring) in the form of a sleep recording test.

A sensor on your finger or ear flap measures the oxygen saturation in your blood.

An elastic belt around the chest and abdomen records your breathing patterns, snoring and body position during sleep.

A so-called oxygen mask measures the air flow through the nose and mouth.

Analysis and diagnosis: After the sleep recording test, the data is analyzed by specialized technicians and doctors. They will assess the number and duration of breathing interruptions, oxygen saturation, sleep stages, snoring and other relevant factors. Based on these results, they will be able to diagnose sleep apnea and assess the severity of the condition.

Follow-up and treatment plan: Once the diagnosis of sleep apnea has been determined, the doctor will draw up a treatment plan based on your individual needs. Treatment may include using a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine, adjusting lifestyle factors such as weight loss or changes in sleep position, a dental brace, or in some cases surgery.

CRM-based sleep apnea assessment is a specialized process performed by sleep experts. They will guide you through the entire process and answer any questions you may have before and after the test.

Treatment of sleep apnea. CPAP

Treating sleep apnea is essential to improving sleep quality and reducing the risk of health complications. There are different approaches to treatment, depending on the severity of sleep apnea and individual needs.

A common treatment method is the use of a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine. This machine works by delivering a constant flow of air through a

mask worn over the nose or nose and mouth. It helps maintain open airways and prevents interruptions in breathing during sleep.

There are also other treatment options, including adjusting lifestyle factors such as weight loss, avoiding alcohol and sleeping pills, and using dental splints that keep the airways open.

About the cpap machine

The CPAP machine is connected to a tube that is connected to a mask that you wear over your nose or both nose and mouth while you sleep. The mask can be shaped to cover the nose, or as a full face mask that covers both nose and mouth.

When you turn on the CPAP machine and put the mask on, the machine begins to deliver a continuous flow of air through the tubing and into the mask. This airflow is constant and keeps your airways open.

How does it help with sleep apnea? When you have sleep apnea, soft tissue in your throat can block or narrow your airway, making it difficult to breathe normally. The CPAP machine creates a constant flow of air that keeps your airways open and prevents them from becoming blocked when you sleep. This helps prevent interruptions in breathing and ensures you get enough oxygen into your body.

It may take some time to get used to using the CPAP machine, but it is important to be persistent. Over time, you will experience improvements in your sleep quality, reduction of snoring and reduction of fatigue during the day.

Our staff will guide you on the correct use of the machine, how to adjust the settings and how to clean the mask and equipment regularly.

CPAP treatment is an effective and commonly used method to improve the symptoms of sleep apnea and promote a better quality of sleep. It is important to use the CPAP machine regularly and according to the instructions to achieve the best results and enjoy the benefits of the treatment.
