However, there are various treatment methods that can relieve tinnitus.

At Charlottenlund Private Hospital, we help you clarify the reason why you experience tinnitus and how it can be treated. We also offer to carry out the treatment itself. You are always welcome to contact us if you have any questions or want to make an appointment.

What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus can best be described as an experience of inner sound. It is not a disease, but rather a symptom of changes in the ear, which can have several different causes, including strong sound exposure, hearing loss and stress. Read more about the causes of tinnitus further down the page.

Tinnitus cannot be heard by anyone but yourself. Some describe the sound as a ringing or beeping in the ears, while others experience it as a hissing, humming or rushing. A common feature of tinnitus, however, is that the sound does not come from outside – it originates inside the head.

It is very individual how tinnitus is experienced. In addition to the fact that the sound can vary, there is also a difference in how strong the sound is, where the sound is experienced, and whether it is constant, pulsating, or whether it comes and goes.

Former for tinnitus

  • Constant tinnitus: The sound does not stop, but is constant and without interruptions
  • Pulsating tinnitus: The sound varies between being weak and loud - either at a fast or slow pace
  • Tinnitus that comes and goes: The sound is irregular and for some periods it may be completely gone. It comes and goes either in a fixed pattern or suddenly and without warning

Causes of tinnitus

Howling or ringing in the ears can be caused by a wide range of different injuries and disorders in the brain as well as in the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.

Some of the most common causes of tinnitus are:

  • Age: Tinnitus is a commonly known disorder in older people. The natural aging process means that incorrect nerve signals can be sent to the brain, which causes the tinnitus sound.

  • Strong sound exposure: If you have been exposed to a sound of particularly high intensity or duration, the ear may have been damaged and tinnitus developed. It could be, for example, a rock concert or an explosion.

  • Hearing loss: Tinnitus is often accompanied by hearing loss - either in connection with age-related hearing loss or other causes.

  • Earwax: Ringing in the ears or tinnitus can be caused by earwax, which blocks the ability to hear properly.

  • Stress: During long periods of stress, the body is overloaded, and as a reaction to this, stress-related tinnitus can develop.

  • Infections: Chronic otitis media and other inflammatory conditions in the ear can cause tinnitus.

  • Especially about pulsating tinnitus: Pulsating tinnitus can be caused by high and low blood pressure, infections and other benign disorders as well as tumors and cardiovascular diseases.

This is just a selection of causes – there are many different commonly known and rare causes of tinnitus.

How does a tinnitus treatment take place?

Any treatment for tinnitus is always preceded by a thorough investigation, where it is determined whether it is tinnitus and what is causing the disorder.

Investigation

The examination begins with a review of the medical history and a thorough examination of the ear canal and eardrum with an otoscope. The examination is supplemented with a hearing test in an anechoic room. After this examination, the individual patient can be advised and treated optimally.

Treatment

Since the causes of tinnitus are many, the treatment of tinnitus is also variable. For some, a hearing aid may be the solution, while for others medication or surgery is needed to treat the noise. We also have good experience in referring our patients who have to live with tinnitus to psychologists to talk about how they can live a good life with tinnitus. Likewise, sound therapy can be soothing for people who have to live with tinnitus.

Which treatment method is necessary is decided by the ear doctor together with you. There is thus no cure for tinnitus, but the treatment method must be assessed individually.
