Safe and secure anesthesia – individually tailored anesthesia at Charlottenlund Private Hospital

Anesthesia with a focus on comfort, safety and personal care

At Charlottenlund Private Hospital, your safety and security are always our top priorities. Our experienced anesthesiologists and anesthesiology nurses are ready to ensure optimal anesthesia, whether you are undergoing a minor or major surgical procedure. You can feel completely safe knowing that you will be closely monitored before, during, and after your operation. Our anesthesiologists are all employed at public hospitals and are highly experienced in anesthetizing both younger and older children. As a specialized service, Charlottenlund Private Hospital offers anesthesia for children as young as 6 months of age for certain procedures. In fact, Charlottenlund Private Hospital has the most experience anesthetizing young children of any private hospital in Denmark.

Why is anesthesia important?

Effective anesthesia is a prerequisite for undergoing surgery without pain or discomfort. Our specialists always adapt the anesthesia to the individual patient and procedure, ensuring you receive the gentlest and most effective care possible.

How anesthesia is performed at Charlottenlund Private Hospital

Before your surgery, you will meet with one of our anesthesiologists. They will review your upcoming procedure, go over fasting guidelines, and explain how the anesthesia will be administered. We will discuss your overall health, previous experiences with anesthesia, and any personal wishes or needs you may have. This allows us to tailor the anesthesia specifically to you. Before the anesthesia is administered, you will be given oral medication designed to help you wake up without nausea or discomfort.

Throughout the operation, you are closely monitored using modern equipment, and the anesthesiologist is present the entire time. This means you are in the safest hands - from the moment you fall asleep until you wake up again. Charlottenlund Private Hospital exclusively uses the latest anesthesia machines from Dräger, the provider of the best and most advanced anesthesia equipment on the market. This reflects a standard of care that sets us apart from many other private hospitals.

Recovery and waking up

After the procedure, you will be taken to our recovery area, where a specially trained recovery nurse will keep you under close observation until you are fully awake and stable. Most patients experience only mild discomfort or fatigue after anesthesia, and our staff will provide effective pain relief and care to give you the best possible start to your recovery.

It is common not to remember much immediately after waking up. However, once you are fully alert, the recovery nurse will call the surgeon, who will come to speak with you. They will provide you with both written and verbal information about the surgery and your post-operative care.

Safe, secure, and entirely centered around you and a positive experience.

Your safety is our highest priority

At Charlottenlund Private Hospital, we are proud to offer anesthesia at the highest level, with a steadfast focus on safety, comfort, and respect for the individual patient. We understand that many people feel nervous before an operation and may worry about the loss of control associated with general anesthesia. That is why we are always available to answer your questions, provide peace of mind, and build trust.

Patient opinion

"The doctor who saw my son was fantastic at talking to him and creating a safe atmosphere. We were welcomed with open arms, and the staff was incredibly welcoming. The most important thing was that Eva and Jacob, who were going to examine my son, were not only skilled but also very child-friendly."

"Very empathetic and understanding staff who took us through the treatment well"

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is it dangerous to go under general anesthesia?

For healthy people without serious illnesses, the risk of a planned (elective) operation with general anesthesia is extremely low. At the same time, you are constantly monitored by both an anesthesiologist and an anesthesia nurse who continuously measure your heart rate, control your breathing and the pain medication.

  • How much pain do you have when you wake up?

Most people actually experience more pleasure than discomfort after surgery - and the vast majority report having slept better than ever!

Some patients complain of mild discomfort or soreness. Quite a few will experience nausea, but this is extremely rare.

You will always be given pain medication both during and after the surgery so that you wake up as comfortably as possible.

Most patients can go home a few hours after the surgery is over and no one is discharged until they are ready for this and we consider it appropriate.

  • Can you wake up during the operation?

It is extremely rare. Modern monitoring and anesthetics make the risk very low – well under 1 in 10,000 patients.

The anesthesiologist constantly monitors you and continuously adjusts the dosage so that you sleep safely throughout the operation.
