Psychologist in Charlottenlund – children, adolescents and adults

Licensed psychologist – metacognitive and cognitive therapy. Book online.

Charlottenlund Privathospital has a psychology department where licensed psychologist Sarah Østergaard Kokholm assesses and treats children, adolescents and adults. The department uses metacognitive therapy (MCT) and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for conditions including anxiety, stress, depression, OCD, racing thoughts and sleep problems. We also offer psychological and neuropsychological assessments as well as psychological support for businesses. Treatment is available individually, in groups or online.

What problems can a psychologist help with?

A psychologist can help when thoughts, emotions or reactions begin to take up so much space that they affect everyday life, work or relationships. You do not need to have a diagnosis to seek help. According to the Danish Health Authority, anxiety disorders alone affect approximately 12% of Danish adults over the course of a year.

Which methods do we use – and what does the evidence say?

We primarily work with metacognitive therapy (MCT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Both are structured, time-limited, research-based methods. The choice between them depends on the nature of the problem and what is most suitable for you.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most well-documented psychological treatment for anxiety. In the Danish Health Authority's national clinical guideline for the treatment of anxiety disorders in adults (2021), cognitive behavioral therapy is recommended as a first-line treatment rather than medication alone for social anxiety, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and agoraphobia. At the same time, the guideline states that it remains uncertain whether metacognitive therapy has the same effect as cognitive behavioral therapy for generalized anxiety disorder and therefore does not recommend MCT as a routine first-line treatment for this group.

What is the difference between metacognitive therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy?

Cognitive behavioural therapy focuses on the content of thoughts. You learn to examine and challenge negative thoughts and change behaviours that maintain the problem. Metacognitive therapy focuses on how you relate to your thoughts. You learn to spend less time worrying and ruminating and to manage your attention without necessarily analysing the content of your thoughts.

In practice, the methods can be combined. On our page about metacognitive therapy, you can read more about how MCT works and about our individual therapy, group programmes and online programmes.

What does a course of treatment with the psychologist involve?

  1. Initial consultation

We discuss your situation, your symptoms and what you would like to achieve through treatment.

  2. Plan and goals

Together, we agree on an expected number of sessions and a clear goal for the treatment.

  3. Sessions

Sessions can take place individually in Charlottenlund, online or as part of a metacognitive group programme. The number of sessions is assessed on an ongoing basis.

  4. Review

We conclude with a review and a plan for how you can maintain what you have learned.

Treatment begins with an initial consultation, during which the psychologist assesses your situation, symptoms and what you would like to achieve through treatment. A plan is then agreed upon, including an expected number of sessions and a clear goal.

Sessions can take place individually in Charlottenlund, online via a secure connection or as part of a metacognitive group programme. The number of sessions required depends on the individual situation and is assessed on an ongoing basis. Treatment is always tailored to the individual. The course concludes with a review and a plan for maintaining what you have learned in everyday life.
