Sleep apnea treatment
Understanding sleep apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder in which the airway repeatedly becomes blocked or narrowed during sleep. This usually occurs because the muscles in the throat relax, causing the airway to partially or completely collapse, obstructing airflow. When the airway becomes blocked, the person temporarily stops breathing – a pause that can last from a few seconds to over a minute, and can happen many times during the night.
Symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea
- Loud snoring: One of the most common symptoms, often with sudden pauses followed by gasping breaths.
- Restless sleep: Frequent awakenings due to breathing pauses.
- Daytime fatigue: Lack of consistent sleep can lead to fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and a feeling of being unmotivated.
- Morning headache: Short oxygen breaks can cause headaches or discomfort in the morning.
- Mood swings and irritability: Lack of sleep can affect mood and increase the risk of depression and irritability.
Risk factors and causes
Obstructive sleep apnea most often affects adults, especially those who are overweight. Other risk factors include age, smoking, alcohol consumption, an anatomically narrow airway, and a family history of sleep apnea.
Treatment of obstructive sleep apnea
- CPAP machine: A machine that uses air pressure to keep the airways open during sleep so that breathing can continue uninterrupted.
- Lifestyle changes: Weight loss, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol intake can reduce symptoms.
- Mouth splint: A dentist can make a splint that helps hold the jaw in a position that keeps the airway open.
- Surgery: In some cases, surgical procedures can help if the airways are too narrow.
Obstructive sleep apnea can have serious health consequences, such as an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes, so it is important to get treatment if you have symptoms.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a CRM survey?
What is sleep monitoring?
Sleep monitoring or CRM is a study where sleep is monitored and sleep patterns are analyzed to assess sleep quality and identify any sleep disorders.
If you have been referred from a public hospital, you will be called to receive loaner equipment that you will need to put on in the evening and sleep with until the next morning.
The equipment measures heart rate, breathing, movements, and oxygen levels during sleep and gives us detailed information about sleep and any pauses in breathing during sleep.
What is sleep apnea testing with Watch-Pat?
If you live far from the sleep clinic at Charlottenlund Private Hospital, it may not be easy to come in for an examination.
In that case, we can offer to send you the equipment in the form of a Watch Pat which can give us the same information as the classic CRM examination and diagnose sleep apnea with very high precision. The equipment is used by the sleep clinics at both Rigshopitalet and Glostrup hospital and is thus both approved and validated for diagnostic use.
What is CPAP treatment?
What is CPAP therapy?
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is an effective treatment for people who suffer from sleep apnea, a condition in which the airways periodically become blocked during sleep, interfering with breathing. CPAP treatment uses a machine that delivers a constant flow of air through a mask, which keeps the airways open during sleep.
This treatment is designed to ensure that the airways remain clear, helping to prevent apnea episodes and improve sleep quality. The CPAP machine is connected to a tube that delivers air to a mask that you wear over your nose and/or mouth while you sleep.
How does CPAP work?
The CPAP machine works by generating a gentle pressure of air that helps keep the airways open, preventing collapse or blockage of the airways during sleep. This allows for stable breathing throughout the night, improving oxygen intake and reducing symptoms of sleep apnea such as snoring, fatigue and daytime drowsiness.
Is CPAP treatment effective?
Yes, CPAP therapy is very effective in treating sleep apnea. When used correctly, it can reduce symptoms such as snoring, improve sleep quality, and increase energy levels during the day. Many people who use CPAP experience significant improvements in their quality of life and overall health.
Is CPAP treatment uncomfortable?
It can take some time to get used to using a CPAP mask, especially at first, but most patients adapt quickly. There are different types of masks and adjustable settings so that treatment can be tailored to each patient's needs and preferences. It is important to work closely with your doctor or sleep specialist to find the best possible solution.
How do I get CPAP treatment?
To get CPAP treatment, you will first need to undergo a sleep test - either CRM or Watch Pat - to diagnose sleep apnea. If sleep apnea is confirmed, a sleep specialist will recommend CPAP treatment and help choose the right machine and setup for you.
