Ear, nose and throat – surgeries and treatments

An ear, nose and throat surgery can relieve discomfort that cannot be adequately treated with medication – from eardrum drainage and tonsil removal to surgery for a deviated nasal septum and chronic sinusitis. At Charlottenlund Private Hospital, all ear, nose and throat surgeries are performed by specialists in ear, nose and throat diseases.

Ear, nose and throat surgery (otorhinolaryngological surgery) is surgery on the ears, nose, sinuses, pharynx, larynx and throat. The procedures are performed by a specialist in ear, nose and throat diseases and range from small outpatient procedures under local anesthesia, such as eardrum drainage, to operations under general anesthesia, such as balloon dilation of the eustachian tube or surgery for a deviated nasal septum.

What ear, nose and throat surgeries are offered?

Charlottenlund Private Hospital offers surgeries in the entire ear, nose and throat surgery area. In the overview below you can read about the individual procedures, including how the surgery is performed and what you can expect before and after.

How is Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Surgery Performed?

The duration of the surgery can range from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the specific procedure. Minor procedures can be performed at the hospital's outpatient clinics across the country, while major operations are carried out in our specialized operating rooms in Charlottenlund.

After your surgery, you will remain in our recovery area for observation until our ENT specialists and anesthesia team assess that you are ready to go home. Your exact discharge time depends on the procedure and the anesthesia used, which will be thoroughly discussed and agreed upon with you before the operation.

If your procedure is performed under general anesthesia, you must be picked up by a relative or friend, and you are medically restricted from driving yourself home on the same day.

What Type of Anesthesia is Used?

The type of anesthesia depends entirely on the procedure and is assessed individually for each patient by the specialist.

While minor procedures are performed under local anesthesia at our regional clinics, more complex operations require general anesthesia. This is administered either as inhaled gas (mask anesthesia) or intravenously, where the anesthetic is given directly into a vein. For safety and patient comfort, procedures like balloon dilation of the Eustachian tube are always performed under general anesthesia.

Prior to your surgery, you will consult with our medical staff to determine which type of anesthesia is best suited for your procedure and overall health.

How Much Does ENT Surgery Cost?

The price depends on the specific procedure. The process always begins with an initial diagnostic consultation with an ear, nose, and throat specialist. As a self-paying patient, this preliminary examination costs between DKK 2,400 and DKK 5,000, depending on the extent of the testing required.

The price for the surgery itself is listed in our fee schedule and will always be agreed upon with you before any treatment begins. If you are referred to us through private health insurance, your policy will frequently cover both the preliminary examination and the surgery. We also perform select operations for the public healthcare sector through our regional public tender agreements.

What is the Process from Examination to Surgery?

Your treatment pathway begins with a comprehensive preliminary examination. During this visit, our specialist will examine you, establish an accurate diagnosis, and assess whether surgery is the most effective treatment path.

If surgery is recommended, we will provide you with a thorough overview of the procedure, discuss your anesthesia options, and outline critical instructions for your pre- and post-operative care. After the surgery, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled to monitor your recovery.

If you are unsure whether your symptoms require surgical treatment, you can read more about common symptoms on our website or book an initial consultation for a professional assessment.
