Hearing aids and private hearing clinic in Charlottenlund

The Hearing Clinic at Charlottenlund Private Hospital offers hearing assessments and hearing aid treatment for adults. Fittings are carried out on an outpatient basis at Jægersborg Allé in Charlottenlund. Hearing tests are performed by an audiologist, and the hospital has its own ear, nose and throat department in the same building. We supply hearing aids from Widex, Oticon, Signia and Bernafon.

What happens when you come in for a hearing test?

We carry out our own assessment, regardless of whether you have already been tested elsewhere. The reason is simple: we need to be confident in the measurements on which we base your treatment, and a measurement is only as reliable as the conditions under which it was performed.

We measure two things. Pure-tone audiometry shows which frequencies you have lost — typically the higher frequencies first. Speech audiometry shows something different and often more important: how much of the speech you hear you are actually able to understand. Two people with almost identical audiograms can benefit very differently from hearing aids, and this is where that difference becomes apparent.

We also examine the ear canal, assess the eardrum and measure the pressure in the middle ear. Afterwards, we sit down with you and go through the results.

We also explain what can realistically be achieved. A hearing aid amplifies and processes sound, but it cannot restore what has been lost in the inner ear. In addition to volume, sound quality and speech understanding may also change, which means your hearing will not be exactly as it was before. It is important to understand this before starting treatment — most disappointments are caused by expectations rather than by the hearing aid itself.

Why does it matter that the hearing clinic is located at a private hospital?

All hearing aid treatment involving public subsidies requires you to have been examined and diagnosed by an ear, nose and throat specialist. This is not a rule we have introduced ourselves — it is a requirement that applies to everyone.

Your hearing test is reviewed by a doctor before we proceed. If the results indicate something that requires further investigation, the ear, nose and throat department is located in the same building, allowing us to plan the next steps without referring you elsewhere.

This matters because not all hearing loss should be treated with a hearing aid.

Some types of hearing loss are caused by conditions that can be treated in other ways — for example, fluid in the middle ear, reduced mobility of the ossicles or changes to the eardrum. In these cases, a hearing aid would amplify the sound without addressing the underlying cause.

Other findings require further investigation. This includes a significant difference in hearing between the two ears, sudden hearing loss, persistent tinnitus in one ear and dizziness occurring together with hearing loss. In rare cases, these symptoms may be caused by a benign tumour affecting the balance nerve, known as a vestibular schwannoma, which requires assessment by an ear, nose and throat specialist.

If we identify any of these issues, further investigation can be planned as part of your assessment.

Which hearing aid brands can you choose from?

We supply Widex, Oticon, Signia and Bernafon.

Each of these four manufacturers has its own approach to sound processing.

• Widex uses very short processing times in its hearing aids, something many users notice particularly when listening to music and in the sound of their own voice.
• Oticon aims to preserve the full sound environment rather than filtering parts of it out, and uses a neural network to help distinguish speech from background noise.
• Signia is designed around conversations where speech moves between several people and adapts as the speaker changes.
• Bernafon detects head and body movements and adjusts its directional focus according to where you are directing your attention.

There is no single brand that is best for everyone. The right choice depends on your hearing loss, your surroundings and what you perceive as natural sound — which is why you have the opportunity to try the hearing aids before making a decision.

In addition to sound, there is also the physical design to consider. Some hearing aids sit behind the ear with a thin wire leading into the ear canal, while others sit entirely inside the ear. Which type is suitable depends on the degree of hearing loss and the shape of your ear canal. The size of a hearing aid does not determine how well it works.

How do we find the right technology level?

All manufacturers produce the same hearing aid models in several technology levels. The hardware is often the same; what differs is the level of signal processing. The higher the technology level, the better the hearing aid is generally able to manage situations involving multiple sound sources at the same time.

However, the difference between technology levels is relatively small in quiet environments. If you mainly have one-to-one conversations and watch television, you will rarely notice a major difference between a mid-range model and a top-level model. For this reason, we do not automatically recommend the most advanced hearing aid. The technology should match the life you lead.

We place each hearing aid in the category specified by the manufacturer — not according to our profit margin. This also means that we choose not to offer certain models if we believe our purchase price does not correspond to the technology level in which the hearing aid belongs.

Who can be treated at our clinic?

We treat adults with uncomplicated hearing loss, which includes the vast majority of people with age-related or noise-induced hearing loss.

Some patients need to be treated at a public audiology department instead. This applies if you are under the age of 18, if your ability to distinguish words is significantly reduced, if you have hearing loss in one ear combined with severe tinnitus, if you also have another serious sensory impairment such as reduced vision, or if you require a bone-anchored hearing device. If we identify any of these circumstances during your assessment, we will arrange the appropriate referral.

To receive a public subsidy, you must be referred by an ear, nose and throat specialist. You can obtain this referral through us.

What is included, and how much does it cost?

The price covers two hearing aids, a charger, hearing test, preliminary assessment, fitting, trial period, reassurance scheme and follow-up. We have fixed prices, and you will be informed of the total cost before making your decision.

Charlottenlund Private Hospital is headquartered at Jægersborg Allé 4 in Charlottenlund and operates clinics in several locations across Denmark.
