Frequently Asked Questions
What are prick ears?
Protruding ears are ears that protrude further from the head than normal. This is most often due to a congenital variation in the ear cartilage – either because the cartilage is too soft, or because the natural fold in the ear (anthelix) is not developed as it normally would.
The condition is completely harmless, but can be cosmetically bothersome, especially for children and young people in social contexts.
When should treatment be considered?
It is an individual assessment. Treatment is relevant if the child or adult feels embarrassed – for example, due to low self-esteem, teasing or discomfort with appearance. Many choose surgery at the age of 10-13, when the ears are fully developed, and the child is often aware of how they look and feel. In adults, treatment can be performed at any age.
How is the procedure performed?
The operation, called an otoplasty, is a minor procedure where the ear cartilage is shaped and placed closer to the head. This is done through an incision behind the ear, so the scar is minimal and almost invisible. In children under 14-15 years of age, we often perform the operation under general anesthesia - in older children and adults it can be done under local anesthesia. You go home the same day, and the ears must be protected with a soft headband for about 10 days.
Immediately after the procedure....
There is a low risk of complications, but as with all surgical procedures, swelling, discoloration, mild pain, or temporary loss of sensation in the area may occur. In rare cases, infection or the need for minor corrections may occur.
Anyone who is going to have the surgery should be aware that there is no guarantee that the ears will be exactly the same afterwards. They typically weren't before either - in fact, not many people have symmetrical and similar ears.
In addition, the ears will be sore for up to a year after the operation. Not that it hurts for a year, but the ears will be slightly sore when you sleep on them during this period. This is completely normal.
We offer thorough follow-up and guidance both before and after the surgery to ensure a safe and successful procedure.
