Subsidies, rules and rights for hearing aids
What you can get, how often, and what you have to pay yourself.
The public subsidy for hearing aids from an approved private provider is DKK 6,934 for two hearing aids in 2026, divided into DKK 4,497 for the first ear and DKK 2,437 for the second. To receive the subsidy, you must be referred by an ear, nose and throat specialist, and normally four years must have passed since you last received hearing aids with a public subsidy. We apply for the subsidy on your behalf.
What options do you have?
You can choose between public hearing aid treatment and private treatment with a public subsidy. The regions are responsible for both, and you decide which route you prefer.
In both cases, treatment funded by the public system requires a referral from an ear, nose and throat specialist the first time.
If you have uncomplicated hearing loss, the choice is yours. However, if the specialist assesses your hearing loss as complex, treatment will always be provided through the public system.
What characterises public hearing aid treatment?
Assessment and provision of hearing aids take place through a public hearing clinic, and the region owns the hearing aids — you borrow them.
There is no out-of-pocket payment for the solution offered by the clinic. However, the clinic determines which hearing aids are included in its range, and follow-up and service are provided at the same location.
You should expect a waiting period. Current waiting times for individual hospitals are available on sundhed.dk.
What is the pool scheme?
The pool scheme is treatment provided by a private-practice ear, nose and throat specialist who has an agreement with the public health insurance system. The hearing aids are the same as those provided through a public hearing clinic.
There is a limit to how many hearing aids each practice may provide per year, and not all private-practice ENT specialists have such an agreement.
The pool scheme is not offered at Charlottenlund Private Hospital.
What characterises private treatment with a subsidy?
You purchase the hearing aids yourself and the public subsidy is deducted from the price. The hearing aids belong to you, and you are covered by the rules of the Danish Sale of Goods Act.
However, there is an out-of-pocket payment. The DKK 6,934 subsidy covers both the hearing aids and the fitting, and you pay any costs above this amount yourself. The amount you pay depends on the technology level you choose.
At our clinic, treatment takes place at a private hospital with its own ear, nose and throat department. The fitting is carried out by an audiologist, and if the hearing test reveals something that requires further investigation, this can be planned as part of your assessment. This may be relevant if there is a significant difference between the two ears, sudden hearing loss or accompanying symptoms.
If you choose another private provider, it is worth asking two things: which brands they offer, and how the medical assessment of your hearing test is carried out. Both vary from provider to provider.
How often can you receive a new subsidy?
Normally every four years.
Four years must pass from the date you received hearing aids through the public system or received a subsidy for private treatment before you can receive the subsidy again.
There are exceptions. These include a significant deterioration in hearing caused by a medical condition, physical changes or wear that make the hearing aid unusable, or if the hearing aid has been lost due to theft, fire or similar circumstances. The municipality assesses each case individually.
If fewer than four years have passed, you can still buy new hearing aids — you simply pay the full price yourself.
Can you receive financial support from other sources?
Yes, there are two possible sources in addition to the public subsidy.
If you are a member of Sygeforsikringen “danmark”, they reimburse 50% of your own expenses, up to DKK 1,500 per hearing aid for members in Groups 1 and 2 and DKK 1,000 per hearing aid for members in Group 5. The amount is paid directly to you, so we cannot deduct it from the invoice. We provide the documentation you need.
If you are a state pensioner with a supplementary health allowance card, the municipality may cover up to 85% of your out-of-pocket payment. The exact amount depends on your individual supplementary allowance percentage. We also help with the necessary documentation.
What is included in our prices?
Hearing test. Preliminary assessment. A pair of rechargeable hearing aids. Charger. Fitting. A two-month trial period during which you can return the hearing aids and receive a refund. Four-year reassurance scheme. Four years of follow-up. Application to the region for the public subsidy. Submission of documentation to Sygeforsikringen “danmark”.
The prices shown on our pricing page are for two hearing aids, including VAT and with the public subsidy already deducted.

Do I need a referral?
Yes, if you want public funding. The referral must come from a specialist in ear, nose and throat diseases, and you can get it from us.

How often can I get a new subsidy?
Normally every four years. Exceptions exist in the event of significant deterioration of hearing or if the device has been lost due to theft or fire.
What if less than four years have passed?
Then you can still buy hearing aids from us. You just pay the full price without any subsidies.
Can I choose private treatment and still receive subsidies?
Yes. If you have uncomplicated hearing loss, you can choose between public and private treatment, and the subsidy is included if you choose an approved private provider.
Do you offer the pool scheme?
No. With us, the treatment is carried out as private treatment with public subsidy.
Can I get subsidies from Health Insurance Denmark?
Yes, if you are a member. Denmark will refund up to 3,000 kroner for a set in groups 1 and 2 and up to 2,000 kroner in group 5. The amount will be paid to you, not to us.
What is a health supplement card?
A card for public pensioners where the municipality can cover up to 85 percent of the out-of-pocket payment. How much depends on your personal additional percentage.
Do I own the devices myself?
In the case of private treatment with subsidies, the devices are yours and you are covered by the rules of the Danish Purchase Act. In the case of public treatment, the region owns the device and you borrow it.
