How is the operation performed?
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes a small, discreet incision in a natural crease at the front of the neck to access the thyroid gland and safely remove one of its lobes. The incision is then meticulously closed with stitches. Most patients are able to go home on the same day or the day after the operation.

Pre-study
Before you are scheduled for surgery, it is important that the diagnosis is correct and scintigraphy, biopsy, and ultrasound or MRI scans are often available, so that the surgeon can assess the extent of the surgery before it is agreed upon.

What is a thyroid gland?
The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland located on either side of the windpipe (trachea) that produces metabolic hormones. It consists of two halves, or lobes, which are connected across the front of the windpipe by a narrow strip of tissue called the isthmus.
The thyroid produces its hormones—primarily T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine)—when stimulated by Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH). These hormones affect virtually every cell in the body, regulating their energy and activity levels. If the gland produces too little hormone (hypothyroidism), you may feel fatigued, gain weight, experience anxiety or depression, and become unusually sensitive to the cold.
Conversely, if the gland produces too much hormone (hyperthyroidism), common symptoms include excessive sweating, a rapid or pounding heartbeat (palpitations), hand tremors, weight loss, and difficulty sleeping. In severe cases, the eyes may appear prominent or bulging—a condition known as exophthalmos.
Normally, the gland's activity is precisely regulated to ensure the perfect hormonal balance is maintained throughout the body.
Why operate on the thyroid gland?
In some patients - most often women - the thyroid gland develops nodules that are quite benign, but which grow and grow, thus becoming both cosmetically disturbing and causing pressure symptoms. This is most often in connection with the disease atoxic multinodular goiter.
This is a fairly harmless condition that many women suffer from and which usually does not need to be treated - unless the nodules in the gland grow so large that they become troublesome. In these cases, several treatments may be offered - and in some cases this will be an operation to remove the side of the thyroid gland that is putting pressure on the neck and causing discomfort.
